Our pets are very much part of our families and many of us like them to join in on our family holidays. With the introduction of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), taking our pets abroad on holiday, can now be a reality.
The Pet Travel Scheme is the system that allows:
Pet dogs, cats and ferrets from certain countries and territories to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they meet the rules.
People in the UK to take their dogs, cats and ferrets to other European Union (EU) and certain non-EU countries and territories, and return with them to the UK without the need for quarantine.
To comply with the requirements of the scheme, your pet must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies and have a valid passport signed and stamped by an Official Veterinarian (OV). Your pet will then be allowed to travel using their pet passport 21 days after the rabies vaccination. Dogs also require tapeworm treatment within set timescales in order to return into the UK.
Our vets at Elands are Official Veterinarians so are authorized to issue pet passports. We can also advise you on the most suitable parasite treatment to ensure your pet is kept safe at all times.
PLEASE NOTE that travel arrangements will change with Brexit and due to the current uncertainty no one knows what the final arrangements will be. If the UK is classified as an unlisted third country all dogs and cats will require a four month preparation period before travel. They will need a rabies vaccination and blood test one month later to show an adequate response to vaccination. A health certificate will need to be issued less than 10 days before travel and will be valid for 40 days. Health certificates are specific to each country and no travel is allowed until 30 days after a successful blood test.

You are responsible for ensuring your pet meets all the rules for entering the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme. Make sure you have had the procedures carried out in the correct order and your pet’s documentation is correctly completed. If you do not, your pet may not be able to enter the country or may have to be licensed into quarantine on arrival.
